At 9.10 am the arrivals and departures came to an abrupt end after a problem was identified on the single runway at the Essex airport, the fourth-busiest in Britain.
At 10.03 it reopened and by now dozens of flights were diverted or delayed, majorly on Ryaniar.
At Luton inbound Ryanair flights from Lisbon, Lamezia Terme and Oslo landed before haeding to Stansted. The flight was two hours behind schedule.
At Southend and easyJet service from Amsterdam landed.By more than 90 minutes or more Departing Ryanair flights to Bologna, Bucharest, Milan, and Rome were delayed. An easyJet departure to Glasgow was delayed.
It is expected that there will be knock-on delays through the day and many flights to and from Standsted are scheduled with minimal ‘padding’.
A spokesperson for the airport said that aircraft were temporarily held from departing or arriving at London Stansted this morning to allow for minor runway surface works to be safely carried out.
During the period four arriving aircraft were diverted to other airports however this will now return to Stansted,They further apologized for the in conveniences the needed safety work had inflicted on the passengers.
