The Raj Thackeray factor is expected to have played an important role in the changing voting arithmetic of this election. The MNS founder, Thackeray addressed many of the public rallies in the state criticizing Modi-Shah. His staunch criticism and unique style of presentation caught attention of National media, too.
Here are the latest developments from the state:
1. The BJP seems to be very confident about their victory in the state of Maharahstra. The party has already erected the stages and Pandals in Mumbai and
Pune where celebrations are supposed to take place. The trend can be tracked once the first round is completed. Nitin Gadkari’s house is all set for the celebration with the decorations and pandals.
2. The contest between former union minister Nitin Gadkari and Congress candidate Nana Patole in Nagpur is one of the contests to look for today. Patole was a former BJP MP from Bhandara-Gondiya constituency who joined the Congress in 2017.
3. The Bahujan Vanchit Aghadi (BVA) founded by Prakash Ambedkar is contesting on all the 48 seats in alliance with AIMIM. VBA is contesting on 47 seats while one is being fought for by AIMIM in Aurangabad. The VBA might divide the ‘secular’ votes of Congress, which ultimately affect the performance of the national party in the state.
4. The bastion of Sharad Pawar, Baramati will be a key contest. Supriya Sule, a daughter of Pawar is contesting against Kanchan Kul pf BJP. This is expected to be a tough fight since the winning margin of Sule has dropped substantially in the last election from 45.9 to 6.5 per cent votes.
5. In Beed, the caste arithmetic is expected to play the important role. BJP has an advantage of social engineering by late veteran leader Gopinath Munde. His daughter is contesting for her second term. She is in contest with NCP candidate Bajrang Sonawane. Maratha and Banajara, both the communities which constitute around 15 per cent of the voters, hold a potential to sway the results.
6. Maval, the neighboring constituency of Pune is another seat where the scion of Pawar family is contesting. NCP leader Sharad Pawar faced a lot of criticism after he announced the candidature of his grandson, Parth Pawar from Maval. He conteste against the sitting MP of Shiv Sena Shrirang Barne who has a stronghold in the constituency. Sharad Pawar himself dropped a plan of contesting elections from Madha.
7. In Maharashtra's Dhule, Union minister of state for Defence Subhash Bhamre is BJP’s candidate against Congress MLA Kunal Patil. Maratha voters in the area are upset with the BJP as their community members were booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act two years ago and there is unrest among Muslims over the party’s candidature for 2008 Malegaon blast case accused Pragya Singh Thakur. The wrath of the tribals, Maratha and Muslim communities in these two constituencies has put BJP on a sticky wicket.
8. A reserved seat for the Scheduled Caste category candidates, Amravati lies in the Vidharbha region. It is also known as the cultural capital of the Vidarbha region. The constituency went to polls in the second phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha election on April 18. Amravati saw a contest between sitting MP Anandrao Adsul of the Shiv Sena and Navneet Kaur Rana of the Yuva Swabhiman Party (of the Congress Nationalist Congress Party alliance). Navneet Kaur Rana wife of MLA Ravi Rana. Adsul has defeated Rana in 2014.
9. Ramdas Chandrabhanji Tadas of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), seeking his second term, fought against Charulata Khajasingh Tokas of Congress. Ramdas Tadas was also the member of Maharashtra Legislative Council from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Tadas later moved to the BJP in 2009 and lost the Assembly elections held in the same which he fought on a BJP ticket. Ramdas Tadas later went on to become the vice president of the BJP. The Congress, on the other hand, had this time fielded Charulata Khajashigh Tokas to contest against the BJP veteran. The competition in Maharashtra was a high stakes one as the Congress-NCP alliance had a tough time tackling the likes of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance having their roots in Maharashtra.
10. Shirur, is another interesting contest to lookout for, where two-time MP Adhalrao Patil contested against TV actor Amol Kolhe, Adhalrao has served two consecutive terms as Shiv Sena MP from Shirur. However, NCP has fielded Kolhe citing the popular support to the actor. He is expected to win over sitting MP.
