  • Telstra is launching Australia's first 5G smartphone and modem on May 28
  • Both devices to access download speeds much faster than the existing devices
  • Telstra to provide 5G coverage in 35 Australian cities over the next 12 months

Telstra is launching Australia's first 5G-enabled smartphone and modem next week.

The company will be selling the Galaxy S10 5G and the HTC 5G Hub modem at its stores from May 28 - nearly seven years after Australia’s first 4G smartphone was released for customers in 2012.

The launch will make Australia the third country after the US and South Korea where these fifth-generation devices are available to consumers.

The Galaxy S10 5G has a colourful 6.7-inch Cinematic Dynamic AMOLED display, a bigger and faster charging battery, and a six-lens pro-grade camera setup, according to the description provided by the company.

Telstra has not revealed the price of the smartphone yet, but is planning to sell the modem plans starting from $70 per month, according to a Herald Sun report.

These devices will allow customers to access download speeds 10 to 20 times faster than the currently available smartphones and modems on the market.

Telstra's chief executive officer Andrew Penn said the telecom company will be launching its new mobile plans at the end of June.

'To start with, when we launch our new plans in late June, we will make 5G available for free for a minimum of 12 months, so everyone with a compatible device has the opportunity to try 5G when they are in a 5G coverage area,' he said.

'Once this free trial period ends, customers on our top two plans will have 5G connectivity included in their plan at no extra charge, and customers on our other plans will have the option of adding 5G connectivity for $15 a month.'

Mr Penn said Telstra has begun rolling out 5G in 10 cities and the company plans to provide coverage in at least 35 cities over the next 12 months.

'All of Telstra's 5G devices will work in our 5G and 4GX coverage areas to provide customers our best possible mobile speeds available,' he said.

'The launch of 5G will bring advancements in mobile gaming, virtual reality experiences, HD video conferencing and other apps not yet thought of.'
