A multi-department survey of Kaggadasapura lake, along with the adjoining Bhairasandra lake, began here on Wednesday with the aim of checking the extent of encroachment.

The survey is being carried out by the Land Revenue Department along with Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, and United Bengaluru following directions from the Lokayukta.

The survey is expected to conclude within a week and a detailed report will be submitted to the Lokayukta by May 28.

According to the Koliwad Committee report, 3 acres and 34 guntas of both the lakes have been encroached upon by both private and public parties.

Suresh N.R., convener of United Bengaluru, said they had filed a complaint with the Lokayukta in 2017 after they found evidence of encroachment in both lakes. The Lokayukta then directed authorities concerned to survey the lake. “We will ensure that the encroachment is removed, the lake is rejuvenated, and boundaries are fenced,” he said.

Residents living near the lake are worried as there is frothing in some parts and they fear it might become the next Bellandur lake.

United Bengaluru, in a release, said Bangalore Development Authority has spent crores of rupees to beautify Kaggadasapura lake area by building 60-ft bunds, a play area, and seating area. However, nothing has been done to rejuvenate the lake or enhance the water holding capacity, they said.
