The 61st annual Fruit Show, one of the marquee events held each year during the summer festival in the Nilgiris, is set to take place at the Sims Park in Coonoor on May 25 and 26.
The show — one among the two events held during the summer festival this year, the other being the flower show — will feature exhibits made of fruits locally produced in the villages surrounding the Nilgiris, as well as at the Pomological Station in Coonoor, which is renowned for producing fruits from trees both native to this region as well as from other parts of the world.
The two-day event is expected to draw more than 60,000 visitors to Sims Park. As part of the spectacle, the horticulture department has grown over 2.6 lakh flowering plants, which will also be in full bloom during the event.
Officials said that around 60 varieties of plants from the United States of America, Japan, France, Germany and Holland have been imported not only for the flower show at the Government Botanical Garden, but also to be exhibited during the Fruit Show.
The horticulture department is working with artists to decide on their signature fruit exhibits, which will be unveiled to the public during the event.
