Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

I had the pleasure of touring the Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens in Atlanta this week. The designers who decorated each room provided loads of inspiration and ideas that embodied the region’s design style, which fearlessly embraces new ideas while paying homage to tradition. One standout trend in several rooms was fabric inspired by abstract artwork. Chairs and pillows looked as if they had been wrapped in textiles taken straight from paintings. Here’s a closer look at how designers have incorporated this trend. And if you’re in Atlanta now through June 2, 2019, you can check it out in person at the show house.
In the Southeastern Designer Showhouse, the team at Tracery Interiors brought in the abstract art fabric trend on the accent pillow. It adds a strong focal point in this eclectic contemporary bedroom.

Savvy Houzz designers have been implementing the abstract art fabric trend as well. In a long hallway off a master bedroom, interior designer Shirley Meisels knew she needed to make a statement. She revamped an inexpensive bedroom bench by covering it in a hand-painted silk by Portobello, and topped the piece with an elaborate Venetian mirror.

Works hanging in the nearby Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago inspired the decor in this colorful Chicago condo by Summer Thornton. The homeowners’ favorite artists include Matisse, Miró, Hirst and Rothko, so the designer looked to their color palettes and compositions. She upholstered the traditional side chair in the foreground with something unexpected — Arty by Pierre Frey.

A colorful mix of abstract, geometric and botanical patterns enlivens this sofa in a Sydney apartment designed by Arent & Pyke.
In this art-inspired home in the Hamptons, on New York’s Long Island, interior designer Amy Lau mixed abstract bedding fabrics with a geometric textile on the windows. The color palette of oranges, blues, grays and cream ties the different patterns together.
