Ludhiana: An elderly man died as a speeding vehicle hit his cycle near PSPCL office on Chandigarh Road on Tuesday morning. The accused escaped from the spot with the vehicle, while the injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died. Some onlookers saw the body and sounded the police, after which the family of the deceased was approached.
The deceased has been identified as Prem Valabh Sharma (67) of Beant Singh Nagar, who was a factory worker. As per his routine, Sharma left his house at around 7.30am to reach his factory in Focal Point. However, on the way, an unidentified vehicle hit him.
Sharma’s nephew Manoj Kumar from Sarpanch Colony said his uncle was working in a factory at Focal Point, and he used to go on cycle. On Tuesday, he left the house, and minutes later, the family received a call that he had met with an accident near PSPCL office on Chandigarh Road. “We immediately reached the spot. Meanwhile, my uncle was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The police have also scanned CCTVs installed near the spot. However, the mishap has not been captured anywhere,” he added.
The SHO at Jamalpur police station, inspector Surinder Kumar, said some onlookers informed police about the incident. On reaching the spot, the police identified that Sharma was coming from the wrong side. Sharma’s house is near Chandigarh Road, and to get on the right side of the road, he was cycling on the wrong side. Meanwhile, an unidentified vehicle hit him. People rushed him to the hospital, where he died.
The SHO further said police had registered a case against unidentified accused under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. The police are further checking more CCTVs installed near the main road to trace the accused.
