Chain snatchers put pregnant woman in danger

Surat: Criminals are putting lives of ordinary citizens in peril in their bid to rob a gold chain or snatch a mobile phone. In a recent incident, a pregnant woman became the target of chain snatchers, but thankfully averted major injuries due to her husband’s alertness. With rising incidences of crime, hapless people have now started taking law into their own hands.

Ashish Gupta, 25, could somehow save his pregnant wife Shruti, 23, from falling off the scooter when two robbers on a motorcycle targeted her at around 6.45 pm on Tuesday on Sita Nagar Bridge in Puna. The robbers came close to the duo and slapped Shruti. Even before she could react, they snatched her gold chain worth Rs 33,000 and then pushed the scooter. “I could hardly keep my balance on the scooter, but decided to give them a chase. They went towards Gayatri Market but had to slow down from heavy traffic. I stopped them and grabbed hold of one, while the other escaped with the gold chain,” said Gupta.
Along with locals, Gupta thrashed the accused, identified as Mohammad Rafiq Sarvar Khan, a resident of Kamrej, before handing him over to the police. Police are now trying to identify the other accused.
