Indian runner Gomathi fails dope test, suspended provisionally

New Delhi, India’s 800m Asian Athletics Championships gold medallist Gomathi Marimuthu has been provisionally suspended after being tested positive for a banned substance at last month’s Doha Asians and the Federation Cup.

According to IAF Athletics Integrity Unit’s tweet on Tuesday, Gomathi had tested positive for norandrosterone, a type of anabolic steroid.

“The AIU confirms Provisional Suspensions against Indian sprinter (sic) Gomathi Marimuthu and Bahraini long-distance runner Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa, both for a violation of the @iaaforg Anti-Doping Rules,” the AIU tweeted.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s long distance runner Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa aslo failed the dope test.

Earlier, Gomathi surprised everyone with her winning time of 2 min 2.7secs at the Asian championships where India won three gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals.

However, Gomathi expressed shocked on her failed test and said she would seek analysis of the ‘B’sample.

If she also fails in her sample ‘B’ test, she would face a maximum ban of four years, according to the officials.

India could now lose one of the three golds it had won at the Doha Asians Games.
