Man trampled to death by elephant

Udhagamandalam: A man was trampled to death by an elephant in Bitherkadu range of forests in Gudalur division in the Nilgiris on Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Balakrishnan, a resident of Pattavayal near Gudalur. According to forest officials, he was on his way home when a wild elephant attacked him near Pattavayal. “Balakrishnan was rushed to a private hospital nearby. After first aid, he was referred to a government hospital in Batthery in Kerala, which was closer to the spot,” forest range officer Manoharan said.

From Batthery, the victim was again referred to a hospital in Calicut. But he died on the way to the hospital, according to the official.
After post-mortem, the body of the victim was handed over to his family. A sum of Rs 50,000 was handed over to his family as initial compensation, the official said.
