An anonymous mother has been slammed online for suggesting her husband pay her a salary for looking after their child.

The stay-at-home mother, from the US, took to Reddit to ask for advice on her finances, revealing she'd like a 'salary' of $3,500 (£2,700) to cover the childcare and housekeeping she does - plus 'pocket money for fun things'.

Other Reddit users were critical of the idea, with many suggesting she was acting selfishly and taking advantage of her husband.

'This lady is delusional, I bet she’d never take her husband's spot to work and have him take care of the kids,' one commented. 'She’s a mother now and wants to still live like how she did before - not possible.'

The mother revealed she had been married to her husband for four years, and they had an eighteen month old baby.

She told Reddit that they had agreed she would be a 'stay-at-home' mother to their son, and explained that she felt she had 'no power' over the couple's finances.

She said: 'My husband earns good money but he's very frugal about nonessential spending because he wants to be financially independent (no job, earnings from investments) at an early age.

'Granted he was like this when I met him but I had also had my own salary at the time to do what I wanted.'

She went on to describe herself as a loser when it came to money, as she enjoyed eating out and going shopping - like a 'normal' person.

She said:' Well now that I stay at home we have mini fights every time I want to buy anything over $150 (£120) (which is the limit he set that needs a "conversation").

'This means if I go out to get clothing, makeup, brunch, little treats, etc. and the amount exceeds $150 (£120), I would need to call him beforehand and talk about what I'm buying.'

Deeming the whole practise 'humiliating', the mother questioned whether she should ask her husband for 'pocket money for fun things'.

Explaining that her sister had an agreement with her husband that meant she was 'paid' for her contribution to the household, she suggested she was keen to do something similar.

She said that the salary would allow her to spend around $900 (£708) per month on herself, including purchasing $350 (£275) designer shoes without having to call her husband to check first.

She went on: 'Would I be the a******e to suggest a similar arrangement with my husband so I don't need to go groveling for money every time I want to buy myself something nonessential?'

Others slammed her on Reddit, with some deeming her question 'selfish' and others suggesting she was 'delusional'.

Other Reddit users praised her husband for living frugally, while suggesting that she was asking for far too much money

One wrote: 'Sounds like you're a bored stay at home mother that wants to spend money on yourself because you can. You spend $900 a month on yourself? That's a lot of freaking money and sounds like he has you on a leash for a reason because you'd spend every cent you could.'

Many were shocked by the amount of money she hoped to ask for, with one writing: 'Maybe it's because I'm in a different financial environment entirely but having to discuss spending more than 150 dollars (£120) is entirely fair.

'That's a distinct sum of money and things worth more than that falls within the reasonable need to talk about.'

A third user commented:' You want to live the life of a rich independent woman (350 for shoes!!!!) But you don't work and are a mom. Act like one.'
