Thane steps out to oust khataaras, members of Citizens Foundation submits pictures of 15 abandoned vehicles to cops

Thane residents have now joined the fight to rid their city of abandoned vehicles. Inspired by the effect Mumbai Mirror’s Operation Khataara has had on the roads of the city, residents’ associations have started reporting abandoned vehicles to Thane Police.

The Thane Citizens Foundation has written to Thane Deputy Commissioner of Police asking him to make Thane ‘Khataara-free’. The group has also submitted pictures of the abandoned vehicles along with their exact locations to the police.

“A lot of khataara vehicles are parked in Thane at various junctions. We have taken pictures of vehicles parked in areas such as Pokharan Road Number 1 Samata Nagar, Thane West and Vartak Nagar areas and have submitted pictures to the police to take action,” said Kasber Augustine, president of the citizens’ group. Augustine added that copies of the letter along with the pictures have also been sent to the Thane Municipal Commissioner for action.

“Such vehicles not only create traffic problems, but some youth also use them to carry out illicit activities,” said Augustine.

Since they started their drive to clear Thane’s roads of such vehicles two days ago, Augustine said they have identified around 15 khataaras which have been lying around for years. On Monday, residents came out on the road with placards to demand the removal of khataaras.

DCP Amit Kale said that they have been taking action against abandoned vehicles for the past few months. He said, “Thane police have already picked up 237 four-wheelers, 139 three-wheelers and 415 two-wheelers in the past few months.” Kale added that while he was yet to receive the letter from the Thane Citizens Foundation, action on abandoned vehicles would continue.

The Thane Traffic Police is already facing traffic problems at various junctions like Shilphata junction on the Mumbai-Pune road, Kongaon road, Ghodbunder road, Gokhale road, Ram Maruti Road, Station Road, Court Naka and Majiwada.

Since last May, Mumbai Mirror has published a series of reports on the scourge of clunkers in our space-starved city as part of the ‘Operation Khataara’ campaign. The campaign was started by 150 residents from Kandivali’s Thakur Village, who came together to compile data of abandoned vehicles in their area. The campaign then spread across the city.
