Sridevi’s ‘Mom’ looking to cross $15 million in China

  • Mom is the latest addition to the trend of Indian films having bounced back to reclaim the game in China
  • So far, seven Indian films have crossed the $15 million mark in China

NEW DELHI: Sridevi’s thriller drama Mom has continued to enthrall audiences in China, crossing the $12 million mark at last count, making $12.19 million (Rs. 84.77 crore) in total box office collections. Released on 10 May in China, Mom is a nearly two-year old Hindi film featuring late actor Sridevi who plays a brave mother looking to avenge her stepdaughter’s sexual assault.

Mom slowed down on (second) Friday, but showed better results on Saturday and Sunday in China," tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh adding that the film should comfortably cross $ 15 million, as per current trending.

Mom was produced by Sridevi’s husband Boney Kapoor and Zee Studios.

As of now, seven Indian films have crossed the $15 million mark in China- PK, Dangal, Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Hichki and Andhadhun. Mom has crossed the $12 million business of war epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and is likely to beat the $14 million earnings of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.

Earlier, Mom had recorded an impressive start in China with three-day opening weekend collections of $5.95 million ( 41.7 crore), making it the eighth highest weekend for an Indian film of all time in the neighbouring country.

Now remembered as lead actor Sridevi’s last release before her untimely demise, one that also won her the National Award for best actor, Mom had made Rs. 31.27 crore upon its release in India in 2017.

To be sure, Mom is the latest addition to the trend of Indian films having bounced back to reclaim the game in China. Last month, black comedy thriller Andhadhun finished at $45.59 million (Rs. 318.85 crore) in the country, emerging as the third highest grossing Indian film there after Dangal and Secret Superstar. This was after a long unimpressive spell where Indian films hadn’t really managed the best run in China though the market has emerged as a goldmine in the past few years.
