‘Water is being supplied through tankers wherever there is severe scarcity’

Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil on Monday told district in-charge Minister U.T. Khader that adequate precautions have been taken to ensure water supply to residents in Dakshina Kannada till the arrival of monsoon.

Speaking at a meeting to take stock of the water situation attended by the Minister and others here, Mr. Senthil said that water rationing was introduced in the city much early anticipating trouble ahead. Similarly, water rationing is introduced in other towns of the district with responsibility being given to Assistant Commissioners and engineers concerned.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer R. Selvamani is directly monitoring the situation in the gram panchayat limits, Mr. Senthil said and added that water is being supplied through tankers across the district wherever there is severe scarcity.

The Deputy Commissioner said that there are 135 borewells in the Mangaluru City Corporation limits, including the newly sunk 11, while 26 out of the 48 opens wells have already been cleaned. The remaining open wells would be cleaned in two days and water from these wells would be used to be supplied through tankers.

He told Mr. Khader that water is being supplied through tankers in Ullal, Mulki and Moodbidri towns. Water is being supplied in Moodbidri and Bantwal once in two days and the problem in supply in Bantwal has been addressed.

Mr. Selvamani said that every taluk is provided ₹ 25 lakh to address water scarcity with some areas in Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks facing severe scarcity. He urged the Minister to arrange for a permanent solution to address water scarcity. Though water is available in Puttur region, low voltage has been affecting water supply, he said.

Monsoon preparedness

Meanwhile, the administration told the Minister that adequate precautionary measures have been taken to address problems that might occur during the forthcoming monsoon. Boats, Home Guards and the required equipment are ready, while compensation for rain-related loss would be paid within 48 hours.

Mr. Senthil urged the Minister to ask the Public Works Department to take care of three ghat roads in the district, which might face landslips during the monsoon.
