Thiruvananthapuram: The corporation council held here on Tuesday took forward the decision to launch mobile resource recovery centres (RRCs) in the city by approving the agenda on carry out maintenance works of trucks which had been out of use for a long time.
The city corporation had earlier approved the decision to launch five mobile resource recovery centres (RRCs) modelled on mobile ATMs, in the council meeting held in February.
Five trucks, which had not been in frequent use since the closure of centralized waste treatment facility at Vilappilsala, will be used for the project. These trucks, which were used for daily transportation of bio-degradable waste, will be redesigned to suit the purpose.
As per the design, it will have a counter, a collection cabin and a storage space. There will be seats affixed in the vehicle for the corporation staff. Five such trucks will be launched as mobile RRCs. The main objective is to cover a major number of wards where people had remained inaccessible to collection drives. At present special collection drives are organized in 10 major points and often residents from less than 15 wards have been able to participate in the collection drive.
The health wing has proposed to spend Rs 6 lakh on redesigning each vehicle. With the closure of the waste treatment plant, corporation was forced to auction many trucks which were used for waste collection. The new proposal to redesign the vehicles would also enable corporation to make sure that the remaining vehicles are not wasted away.
The council also witnessed a heated debate on KWA’s initiative in implementing various works under JNNURM scheme, which had been wound up. The councillors alleged that KWA seldom paid heed to the appeals of councillors on water scarcity in various places. Mayor V K Prasanth said that corporation and KWA had worked together to revive many schemes which could not be implemented under JNNURM.
The council also approved the amount being paid to KWA for executing JNNURM and AMRUT works in water supply and sewerage sector at various stages. LSGD had earlier directed that fund transfer for AMRUT need not be presented in council meetings.
