SHRC seeks report on cops assaulting IT staff

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has asked senior police officers as to why a case of robbery has not been registered against two policemen attached to Kanathur police, following an incident in which they allegedly assaulted and extorted money from two staff of an IT firm.

After taking suo motu cognisance of a media report over the incident, SHRC member D. Jayachandran sought for a detailed report from Joint Commissioner of Police (South Zone) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) into the incident, within four weeks. “Why the higher police officers have not taken suitable action against the Inspector of Police of Kanathur Police and also his neglect in preventing the violation of human rights?” the Commission sought to know.

According to the media report, 25-year old trekker Karthik and 27-year old Yashwant were interrogated by policemen Balasubramanian and Danikachalam attached to Kanathur Police, near Panaiyur beach on the East Coast Road. The report claimed the policemen assaulted them and later snatched ₹2,000 from them.
