A man accused of killing his wife at a public garden has had his murder trial delayed after he slipped and struck his head at the scene of his partner's death.

Peter Rex Dansie, 70, is facing a Supreme Court trial over the drowning of his wife, Helen, 66, at Veale Gardens, in Adelaide, in April 2017.

Dansie had been visiting the site on Tuesday as part of his ongoing trial, as prosecutors claim he pushed his wheelchair-bound wife into a pond.

Dansie was returning from the gardens when he fell over before he was taken to hospital.

His lawyers told the court later that the 70-year-old would remain in hospital for a few hours for observation.

The judge-alone trial was adjourned until Wednesday morning.

Justice David Peek said he was surprised Dansie walked to and from the scene.

'The way that he shuffles into the dock on a daily basis would lead me to infer that he'd have a lot of trouble walking any particular distance,' he said.

'It never ever occurred to me that he would be walking to or from a view, just didn't occur to me.'
