Ludhiana: Gang of train robbers busted, four arrested

LUDHIANA: The Government Railway Police (GRP) claimed to have busted a gang of thieves with the arrest of its four members during a late night checking at city railway station. The accused have been identified as as Balwinder Singh of Ludhiana, Pardeep Kumar of Jalandhar, Tej partap of Ludhiana, Prem kumar of Fazilka.
According to cops, all arrested accused are in their early twenties and have committed several robberies in long distance trains passing through city railway station and going towards Bihar, Kolkata and Uttar Pradesh.
The police have recovered four cell phones and knives from the possession of the accused during initial hours of investigation.
While addressing the media, in charge at GRP station at Ludhiana Balbir Singh said, “We had received a tip of that a gang of train robbers was active in the area. Acting on that tip off, a police party under the guidance of Dedar Singh carried out intensive checks on various platforms of the Ludhiana railway station on Sunday late evening hours. During the checking, we traced all four accused and arrested them. At the time of the arrest, they were planning to conduct another major theft in trains passing through the city.”

“Kingpin of the gang Balwinder Singh was also involved in several other theft cases. During investigation, we came to know that all of the accused were planning another robbery as due to summer vacation there was maximum rush in the trains passing through the city. The accused targeted people during late nigh hours. They will be produce in court and we will seek their custody for further investigation in the matter,” Balbir Singh said, adding, “A case under sections 401 (punishment for belonging to gang of thieves), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the IPC and also under the Arms Act has been been registered against all accused.”
“We have planned a special inspection drive on daily basis at every nook and corner of the city railway station owing to the summer vacation rush,” he added.
