The daylight attack on two youths has come as a wakeup call for police who have acted swiftly to create a list of history-sheeters in Kamarajapuram and More Market areas. For now, police have included the names of 10 youths from both the localities. Two picketing points have also been established temporarily in both areas to prevent any untoward incidents. The Saravanampatti police say they are trying to arrange a peace committee meeting between the two-area people to resolve the rivalry among the two area youths.
A group of women and youth from Kamarajapuram area for their part have met district collector K Rajamani on Monday and requested him to bring a permanent solution for the gang rivalry. The district administration is planning to convene a peace committee meeting with the people of both the areas next week.
“We are concerned about the future of our youth. Their life should not be ruined for the sake of a meaningless rivalry. So, we have decided to arrange a peace committee meeting with the people of the two areas, police officials and education department officials,” said a senior officer from the district administration. The officer said anti-social elements should be isolated from youth and the latter should not be dragged into violence by the gang members.
Deputy commissioner of police L Balaji Saravanan told TOI that stringent actions would continue. “We have deputed police personnel in both areas round-the-clock and our police patrol teams are often visiting the areas. Those who are trying to disturb the peace in the areas in the name of gang rivalry, will be dealt with an iron fist,” Balaji Saravanan said.
Sources said the Saravanampatti police have listed out 50 history-sheeters in their limits, including 10 from Kamarajapuram and More Market areas. As of now, 24 history-sheeters are very active, and police are monitoring their movements.
