MADURAI: The State Human Rights Commission (
SHRC) has directed the
Tamil Nadu government to give a
compensation of Rs 50,000 to a Nagercoil-based
advocate, who was a victim of excesses by three cops at Eraniel police station in Kanyakumari district.
In his petition, advocate A Arul Raja Rocky Roy said he was protesting with locals against a Tasmac liquor outlet at Eraniel Konam on July 13, 2017. The advocate said inspector Sudesan had abused and manhandled him, tearing his shirt.
Two other policemen kicked him and questioned him for participating in the protest.
Sub-inspector had Jinna abused and attacked him, the petitioner stated.
The petitioner contended that he had been treated in the Thakkalai Government Hospital for his injuries.
In response, police officials stated that the said Tasmac outlet had been shifted as per district collector’s order and the people had been indulging in a peaceful protest. However, the petitioner had attempted to disrupt peace by spreading rumours that the Tasmac outlet would be opened and so he had been arrested, they said.
They denied any ill treatment on their part and said the petitioner had been released on bail by police.
After perusing the submissions, SHRC member D Jayachandran held that the complainant had proved that there was human rights violation and directed the state government to give a compensation of Rs 50,000 to him. The said amount should be recovered from Sudesan and Jinna, the commission said and recommended departmental action against them.
