Don’t raze check dams, Sushant Lok residents tell MCG

Gurgaon: Residents of Sushant Lok on Saturday staged a protest against the demolition of check dams in the area. According to the protesters, digging up of the roads in the colony and demolishing of the check dams will lead to waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.
The residents complained that these dams were constructed 10 years ago to address the waterlogging menace and without working out any alternative measure to contain flooding of the roads, MCG’s recent drive will adversely affect the residents. They further said that if the corporation fails to withdraw the drive, they will intensify the protest.
“Due to these check dams, the waterlogging issue in the colony was resolved. However, with MCG demolishing the check dams, we fear Sushant Lok will be submerged this monsoon,” said Sameer Kochhar, chairman, SKOCH Development Foundation. According to the residents, about 12 check dams were built in 2010 when the area witnessed heavy waterlogging. They claimed that the society is at a lower elevation compared to other areas in the city and even mild showers lead to waterlogging.

“Without consulting us, MCG started conducting the drive. We have been in touch with the authorities and the CM of Haryana. If we do not get any support from them, we will have to escalate the matter,” said Dr Gurusharan Dhanjal, a resident of the society.
However, MCG’s executive engineer told TOI that the said demolition is being carried out on the basis of a complaint filed by residents of the same society. “We received a complaint from residents that due to these barriers water gets accumulated in front of their houses. So, we were directed to address the issue,” noted Dharamvir Mallik, executive engineer, MCG.
