PANAJI: Preliminary inquiry has found a guard at the Colvale central jail guilty of negligence after over 80 sachets of tobacco and lime were seized while being sneaked into the jail premises along with milk packets on a trolley while the guard in question was on duty.
IRB personnel guarding the gate had brought it to the attention of the authorities that tobacco was being smuggled into the prison, an official said.
He said a preliminary inquiry has been conducted and that the report has been sent to higher ups for recommending appropriate action be taken against the jail guard.
Visitors to the Colvale jail have to pass through three gates to enter the jail premises. These gates are manned by IRB personnel as well as jail guards.
The officer said that though IRB personnel noticed tobacco sachets among the milk packets on the trolley, nobody seems to know how they landed there. “It can’t be that no one saw anything,” the officer said adding it is not the first time that such incident has been noted.

A few months ago, a security personnel was caught red-handed trying to smuggling narcotics inside his shoes. He was later suspended.
Another official said that security at the Colvale jail is far more orderly and stringent as compared to the situation that existed at the Aguada central jail four years ago. The old jail had repeated incidents of jail breakouts, despite it being housed inside historic fort.
