CHANDIGARH: A 28-year-old resident of Lalru whose marriage was to be fixed on Sunday was killed and five others injured after a car collided with a jeep near Kiran Cinema in Sector 22 in the early hours of Saturday.
Navdeep Singh, the victim, worked as a cab driver. The injured are Ishpreet Kaur, Arshdeep Singh, Gurpreet Kaur and Prince, all residents of
Rupnagar, and Akhilesh Kanwar, a resident of Sector 41.
Kanwar said he hired a cab for Hotel Aroma for dinner on Friday night. After dinner, Kanwar was returning home with his friend Abhinav, Jyoti and Bhavya. As they reached near Kiran Cinema light point, a Mahindra Thar jeep driver hit their cab at a high speed after allegedly jumping the red light. Police said Prince was driving the jeep and going towards Sector 22 D from Sector 22 A.
The impact of the collision was such that the jeep overturned. Police said two women and two men in the jeep were among the injured.
All the injured, including cab driver Navdeep and Kanwar, were taken to Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16, from where Navdeep was referred to PGI. Later, he succumbed to his injuries. Family members of Navdeep said he was the youngest of three siblings. His family was planning his marriage, with the family of a prospective bride coming to their house on Sunday to fix the
wedding.
Police registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and said efforts are on to arrest the absconding jeep driver.
