Video of cop taking ‘bribe’ goes viral

Tirupur: A video showing a traffic police inspector getting money from a motorist in Kangeyam here has gone viral on social media. While the video was circulated stating that a cop was receiving a bribe, a senior police officer, however, said he was collecting fine in the footage.
The video was allegedly shot when the inspector, Muthuramalingam, was on duty in Kangeyam on Saturday evening.
The video showed Muthuramaligam receiving a currency note. He checked whether it was a counterfeit currency before putting it in his pocket. The inspector did not write or give receipt for collecting money in the video.

However, a police source said the inspector stopped three youths travelling on a bike. “As it was against rules for three people to travel on a bike and youths were also not wearing helmets, the inspector asked them to pay fine for violations,” the source said.
Another senior officer said, “The inspector did not receive bribe but collected fine from a traffic violator. But the violator took the video and circulated it with a wrong intention. Search is on for people who circulated the video.”
