Kanpur: A
criminal, who tried to escape from police custody after snatching a pistol from a sub-inspector, was arrested along with one of his aides following an encounter with police near Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in Chakeri area of the city on Sunday morning. He and his aide sustained bullet wounds in their legs, and have been admitted to Kanshiram Trauma Centre in Chakeri.
“The criminal, identified as Chand, resident of Babupurwa area of the city and his aide Munna of Khajua locality of Fatehpur district, were wanted in connection with several highway robberies.
On Saturday, the police arrested them from Chakeri area. On Sunday morning while they were being taken to Babupurwa locality for recovery of cash looted by them recently, Chand snatched the pistol from sub-inspector Subhash Chandra. He and Munna then jumped out of the police vehicle near DMSRDE in Chakeri and tried to escape before opening fire from the same pistol,” SSP Anant Deo told TOI.
Fortunately, the bullet missed the target. “In the retaliatory firing, both the criminals sustained bullet injuries in their legs. They have been admitted to Kanshiram Trauma Centre in Chakeri where they are undergoing treatment,” the SSP added.
“The two, along with their third aide, Pappu Nepali of Fatehpur, used to rob commuters on the highways after offering them lift in their four-wheeler. As many as eight loot cases are registered against the three in the police stations of the city and Kanpur Dehat. They were also involved in robbing a farmer and a youth in the city,” said inspector Chakeri Ranjeet Rai. Further investigations are underway to arrest other members of the gang, including Pappu Pappu Nepali, he added.
