HYDERABAD: At 42.7° Celsius on Sunday, city experienced its hottest day this season. In May last year, 42.5° Celsius was the highest maximum temperature recorded in Hyderabad. At 29.8° Celsius, which is three degree Celsius above normal, even the minimum temperature in the city was on the higher side.

Meteorologists predict that there is no respite for Telangana as heatwave conditions are likely to continue till May 21 with the mercury levels expected to touch 42-43° Celsius in the city and above 45° Celsius in northern districts.
Following the heatwave conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad issued a warning for isolated pockets in Telangana advising public to not be directly exposed to sunlight and take necessary precautions. Meteorologists forecast that the conditions in the city and state are only set to worsen owing to warm and dry northwesterly winds blowing over the region.
“As warm and dry northwesterly winds are blowing in Telangana, the northern parts of the state are likely to continue observing heatwave like conditions in some parts. Hyderabad is also likely to see above normal temperatures during the day. Night will also remain warm in the region,” read a weather forecast issued by Skymet, an independent weather forecasting agency, adding that Hyderabad will see uneasy and hot weather with a warm morning.
The situation is equally bad in districts with many areas in Jagtial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Peddapalli, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Mahbubabad to name a few experiencing maximum temperature above 45° Celsius. According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, mercury levels in nine of the 33 districts in the state touched above 45° Celsius.

The highest temperature of 45.9° Celsius was recorded in Velagtoor in Jagtial followed by 45.8° Celsius in Metpalle in Jagtial and 45.7° Celsius in Dharmapuri in Jagtial. Following this, the Telangana State Development Planning Society asked local authorities to take action in order to ensure that no heatwave-related deaths are recorded during this season.
The weather conditions are expected to slightly improve only from May 22 with IMD, Hyderabad forecasting that thunderstorm activity accompanied with gusty winds (40 to 50 kmph) and lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana. However, there is no long-term relief as the onset of southwest monsoon over Telangana may happen only around June 21, forcing residents to reel under hot and humid weather conditions for another month, at the very least.
