They cheated the victim to the tune of over ₹1 lakh in April

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly cheating people after honeytrapping them, the police said on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar said 38-year-old Ashwani from Uttar Pradesh and a resident of Uttam Nagar and his 41-year-old girlfriend were arrested on Friday.

The police said they received a complaint from a resident of East of Kailash on April 20 stating that an unknown person stole his wallet and mobile phone and was cheated of ₹1,50,000.

With the help of technical surveillance leading the cyber cell team to the last beneficiary account, the police said they identified the accused.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly told the police that they had come across the victim on a matrimonial website.

“The woman lured the victim after which the two started chatting. She then offered to meet him at a hotel where she got him drunk and then fled off with his wallet and phone,” Mr. Kumar said.

The accused then allegedly transferred money from the complainant’s debit and credit card to their e-wallet account.

“They changed credentials of victim’s e-wallet and purchased gold through to divert the investigation. They then sold the gold and transferred the amount in their respective bank accounts,” Mr. Kumar said.

The accused have cheated more people using the same modus operandi but the victims did not approach the police for “societal reasons”, an officer said.
