The commissionerate police here on Friday felicitated two of its personnel for rescuing a youth, who was injured after falling from a running train in the city on Wednesday.
Havildar Sukanta Kumar Hati and home guard Santosh Kumar Samantaray were rewarded with Rs 1,000 each and appreciation letters.
Commissioner of police Satyajit Mohanty, who felicitated Hati and Samantaray in the presence of DCP Anup Sahoo and other personnel, said the timely response by the duo saved the life of Umesh Kumar, the injured train passenger.
Police said the 27-year-old Kumar of
Bihar was on his way back home from Chennai in Ernakulam-Patna Express when he accidentally fell down from the running train between
Vani Vihar and Mancheswar stations. A profusely bleeding Kumar dialled 100 to communicate the modern control room around 4 am, seeking help. The control room immediately intimated the nearby patrolling van no-7, manned by Hati.
"I along with Samantaray swiftly responded to the distress call and rushed towards the railway track and nearby landmark (railway electric pole numbers), as narrated by the victim. We parked our van near Vani Vihar station and walked along the track towards Mancheswar station. After walking 300 metres, we found Kumar groaning in pain," Hati said.
"I lifted him on my shoulder as he was unable to walk. Putting him on my shoulder I walked back to our van. Samantaray helped me. We immediately shifted the injured to Capital Hospital and informed his family members. He is safe now," Hati said.
In the last four months, over a dozen police personnel, including traffic constables and havildars of patrolling vans, have been felicitated by the commissionerate of police for their Good Samaritan spirit and preventing crimes.
