An infant abandoned on road was rescued by two teenagers and admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Thursday. C.S. Chandrasekar (19) and S. Sathyadharan (18) found the baby inside a bag on a platform on Government Arts College Road behind the CMCH building. “We were walking on the road when we heard the baby crying,” Chandrasekar told The Hindu.

Chandrasekar said that he rushed to the security guard at CMCH, who instructed to dial the 108 helpline. The infant was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and was admitted to the Casualty Department, he said.

The Race Course police were notified of the incident on Friday, following which an officer went to enquire about the infant at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, police said. The infant was male and was less than a week old, the police were told by the hospital. Hospital sources said the baby had no external injuries and was weighing 2.79 kg. “We have a breast milk bank, so we are able to manage the needs of the baby,” the sources said, adding the baby would be handed over to Saranalayam, an orphanage in Kinathukadavu, soon.
