Vehicle safety, documents to be checked

The fitness inspection of school vehicles started at the Police Grounds on Friday. There are a total of 1,083 vehicles belonging to various educational institutions in the district. Of these, around 283 vehicles ply in Villupuram alone.

A School Bus Inspection Committee, headed by Villupuram Collector L. Subramanian with the Revenue Divisional Officer and other officials conducted checks on school buses to see if they satisfied the stipulated 25-point norms. The inspections would go on for the next few days.

The officials would check whether the driver has at least five years of experience. The credentials of the attendants would also be checked. A senior official of the Villupuram RTO said that 15 buses were found not eligible. The committee has given the schools a week’s time to fix the issues.

The vehicles must also be fitted with first-aid boxes and speed governors. Notices would be issued to managements that fail to comply with these norms, the official added. Insurance, permit, fitness certificate, driving licence, tax and pollution control certificates would also be verified.
