Parents of abandoned Nerul baby identified but not traced

The police had circulated the baby’s photograph on the social media and few residents had called and gave the police information about the infant’s parents.

A day after an infant girl was found abandoned near the railway tracks at Juinagar, the Nerul police identified her parents.

When the police went to their flat at Nerul on Saturday after a tip-off, they found the house locked.

On Friday, residents spotted the girl, aged around 11 months, lying in a bush along the tracks and informed the police.

PG Ghadge, sub-inspector from Nerul police station, said, “We had circulated the baby’s photograph on the social media. Some residents called us and gave information about the infant’s parents.”

“We reached the address given by them, but found the flat locked. We have also got CCTV footage of the infant with her parents,” he said.

Ghadge said, “We have understood from other people that both the parents work in offices and they would keep fighting frequently. But under what circumstances they had to abandon the baby is not clear.”

The police have registered a case under section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unidentified parents.

“Once we trace the parents, we will interrogate them. It’s only after that our seniors will decided if we need to arrest them. Our teams are now looking for them,” the officer said.
