GMCH becomes 1st in Vid to start MCh course in paediatric surgery

Nagpur: Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) of the city has become the first college in Vidarbha to get the all necessary MCI (Medical Council of India) norms to start super speciality course in neonatal and paediatric surgery from year 2019-20. The course will train doctors in performing high risk surgeries on newborns and children.
The admission process for the three-year course, known as MCh (paediatric surgery), will start soon and session by August this year.
This would be the second MCh course in the paediatric department of GMCH as it has already an MCh in plastic surgery sanctioned long back. GMCH will have two seats of Master of Chirurgiae in paediatric surgery (MCh — paediatric surgery) from the upcoming academic session.

The hospital’s OPD has a child patient footfall of nearly 300 daily, said Dr Nilesh Nagdeve, associate professor at the paediatric department. “About 30-40% of these patients require surgical inputs. Presently, they are being looked after by doctors in the general surgery wing. After this course, we will get dedicated staff and specialized doctors to treat children. Many surgeries for which people have to travel up to Mumbai, will be performed in Nagpur itself,” he said.
When asked how this course will benefit doctors, Dr Nagdeve said the course creates ability of self-learning among the candidates. “Candidates have a bright option of teaching in their speciality of education both at government and private institutes. Paediatric surgeons provide surgical care for all problems or conditions affecting children that require surgical intervention,” he said.
