Residents want Sukrawarpet Road to be relaid at earliest

Coimbatore: Sukrawarpet Road that was dug up to lay pipelines for underground drainage (UGD) project, is yet to be relaid. Residents, commuters and shopkeepers have urged the city corporation to take steps to relay the road soon.
Traffic rule violation is another problem that the residents here face. Though only one-way traffic is allowed on Sukrawarpet Road, motorists are seen commuting from the opposite direction as well, causing inconveniences for both the pedestrians and commuters alike.
M Krishnakumar, 38, a matchmaker from the area, said the road was unsafe for children to cross.
Also, the road is riddled with potholes, which pose threats to motorists, the residents said.
As vehicles pass by on the stretch, dust envelops the entire area, causing breathing difficulties to local residents. Shopkeepers said their shops were also filled with dust and it has hit their business. They also complained that there was no enough space to park vehicles on road.
G Saraswathi, 58, a home maker, said it was difficult to even walk on the road, which is fully damaged.

Construction waste is another problem they face. “Construction waste often block drains. We spent around Rs 650 to clear them once in two months,” K Ramasamy, 75, a resident of the locality, said. “To avoid the drainage issue, we have now moved to Venkittapuram.”
When contacted, corporation officials assured that swift action would be taken to rectify the issue.
