‘Elections are over, we are friends again’

Congress candidate Ashok Singh arrives at house of Vivek Shejwalkar

Chronicle Reporter, Gwalior, Hundreds of Congressmen gathered in the morning on the bungalow at Gandhi Road, were taken aback when BJP candidate of Gwalior parliamentary constituency, Vivek Shejwalkar reached there suddenly and asked about Ashok Singh when he came here.

As soon as the news came, Ashok Singh himself came to the lawn and took Shejwalkar to his living room, where both competing contestants shared their own electoral experience with each other.

The Congress workers were eager to know that till four days back they were campaigning against each other, what are the two leaders talking about, why is so much love of Shejwalkar, who is a rival of Ashok Singh. Shejwalkar, who has been holding the post of Mayor of Gwalior twice, is considered as a very simple leader. Despite being a mayor, he moves in the city on an Acvtva.

In Gwalior’s politics, Shejwalkar and Ashok Singh’s families have been strong opponents of each other. In the Lok Sabha elections of 1980, Ashok Singh’s father, former PWD minister Rajendra Singh and Vivek Shejwalkar’s father, Narayana Krishna Shejwalkar were pitted against each other in which Rajendra Singh lost by 25 thousand votes. Narayan Krishna Shejwalkar was also the mayor of Gwalior twice, besides being a Mayor.

When Ashok Singh and Vivek Shejwalkar were asked about today’s unexpected meeting, both of them smiled and said that elections and politics are in different places and personal relationships have different places. He said that even though their fathers contested against each other, they were friends with each other. He has maintained this glorious tradition too.

Significantly, Ashok Singh is contesting Lok Sabha elections from the last four times as a Congress candidate. He was twice competing with Yashodhara Raje Scindia and once Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, he lost all three times by a difference of 25 to 35 thousand votes. This time he has got a strong hope of his victory.
