CHENNAI: Saturday (May 18) is the last date to apply for 25% seats reserved in private schools under Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
These seats are earmarked for children belonging to economically weaker and socially backward groups residing within 1km radius of the desired, recognized school.
Parents can apply through government's online RTE admission portal (http://rte.tnschools.gov.in/tamil-nadu). Any applicant can select up to five schools and if the number of applications exceeds seats available, then students will be shortlisted using a lot system.
So far, more than one lakh candidates have applied for 1.21 lakh RTE seats available in private schools across
Tamil Nadu. In Chennai, more than 6,300 parents have applied for seats under this quota this year.
Though the state school education department promised that 600 CBSE schools will also be added to the portal this year, not many schools were listed.
