7 of them clear SSC exam with grades between 8 and 9.8

Seven boys of ‘Parivartana’, a shelter home, have secured a grade point average (GPA) between 8 and 9.8 in the SSC examination.

While two of them attended an English medium school, three students studied at the Municipal Corporation High School and two at an NGO-run school.

The boys went beyond classroom teaching to prepare for the examination. They studied together in mornings and evenings, and shared notes and tips with each other.

While six of them want to be engineers, one wants to be a school teacher. “Our teachers taught us with special care and helped us clear the examination. I want to do the same for my students when I become a teacher,” says K. Ramesh, who secured a 9 GPA. His friend S. Nagur, who secured an 8.8 GPA, wants to join the Navy after completing engineering “to give back to the country”.

Except for M.G. Manikantha, who scored a 9.8 GPA, the rest had tough time with mathematics and took his help throughout the year. Besides, they had to work hard to prepare for physics and English examinations.

However, they never missed out on leisure and fun. “We didn’t miss our weekend film sessions and often went out to take a break. But, we spent six hours a day on studies before the examination,” say G. Hemanth and P. Sundar Kumar.

Giving back

Six of them are going to enrol at a polytechnic college and one is going to join Intermediate at a private college. “We are going to tutor the home’s youngsters who will take the examination next year,” say N. Ganesh and G. Rakesh.“We are happy that the seven children have passed the examination with good scores. They can pursue the courses of their choice as the home is ready to support them,” says Vakkalanka Ramakrishna, founder secretary of Parivartana, established in 2003 and housing 70 boys. “So far, 10 boys from the home have become engineers and another 15 have completed diploma and are working in different companies,” he says.
