Coimbatore Corporation on Friday demolished around 20 houses that were constructed encroaching upon Karumbukkadai-Saramedu Road, said S. Ravichandran, Town Planning Officer in-charge.
Earlier, a few weeks ago, the civic body had demolished portions of 60 houses that were eating into the road space.
The two demolitions had helped the civic body recover road space for 700m and opened up Karumbukkadai-Saramedu Road that led up to Nanjundapuram.
The Corporation along with the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board is taking steps to provide alternative accommodation for the occupants of the demolished houses.
Mr. Ravichandran said the civic body had sought the cooperation of the United Jama-ath before embarking on the demolition and it had been a smooth affair.
Sources familiar with the demolition drive said that the Corporation’s objective was to lay a road from Karumbukkadai to Nanjundapuram. The demolition was the first step. The second was working with the Revenue Department for acquiring lands to lay the road.
