PUNE: Six men were arrested and two others were booked early on Friday for allegedly kidnapping a 40-year-old business consultant from Baner on Thursday night.
Senior police inspector Bhaskar Jadhav of the Chatushrungi police told TOI that the business consultant, Marthi Venkatratnam Dinkar (40) of Balewadi was kidnapped over a payment dispute.
The police identified the arrested men as Suresh Santosh Sanas, Uttam Rajaram Chorghe, Santaji Tanaji Bhosale, Akshay Tukaram Dharpale and Tajesh Ravindra Limhan. “All the men are in the real estate development business. The two booked suspects are property developers and their role in the crime has been ascertained. They will be arrested soon,” he said.
According to the complaint, Dinkar and his partners had a meeting at their office in Baner, following which Dinkar and one of his partners came out of the building and started chatting. “This is when two men on a motorcycle and four men in a car arrived at the spot. The men in the car alighted from the vehicle and rushed towards Dinkar. They grabbed him and pushed him in the car,” the officer said.
As the car sped away, Dinkar’s partner took down the registration number of the vehicle and alerted the police control room. “The car headed towards Balewadi and later went on the Katraj-Dehu road bypass. At Wakad the driver took a ‘U’ turn and started moving towards Katraj,” Jadhav said.

The suspects threatened Dinkar saying they wanted to ‘recover’ their money from him. “As the vehicle reached Katraj, we alerted the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station and an officer intercepted the car on the Katraj bypass (towards Katraj new tunnel) and rescued Dinkar. The six men were rounded up and taken to the the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station for further legal action,” Jadhav said.
When contacted, Dinkar expressed reluctance to talk.
