Tamil Nadu Government Constituent Colleges Guest Lecturers Association (TNGCCGLA) has appealed to the government to take necessary steps to provide at least three years for the teaching staff to meet the minimum qualification criterion stipulated by University Grants Commission (UGC).
As per UGC norms, all the teaching staff in government, government-aided and self-financing colleges must have either completed Ph. D or cleared National Eligibility Test (NET) or State-level Eligibility Test (SET). Recently, Madras High Court asked the universities in the State to strictly enforce this regulation.
In a statement, TNGCCGLA president A. Kathali Narasinga Perumal said that thousands of teaching staff working as guest lecturers in government colleges, constituent colleges of universities, and those working in self-financing colleges would lose their jobs if the regulation was implemented with immediate effect.
Highlighting that this would adversely affect the student community as well, he said that the government must appeal to the court and obtain at least three years for the faculty members to meet this criterion.
While welcoming the implementation of UGC norms on educational qualification, the association said that the government must also ensure that guest lecturers and those working self-financing colleges were paid the minimum salary stipulated by UGC.
