The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered a probe into the alleged denial of admission to a differently abled child by two private schools in Ernakulam district.

The regional director of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and director of Public Instruction must conduct an urgent probe and submit a report, said SHRC Chairman Antony Dominic. The principal of a private school in Thiruvaniyoor, which refused admission to the child after collecting fee in advance, must give an explanation in writing about the complaint submitted by the child’s grandfather, he said.

The case will be taken up for hearing on June 7. The child’s grandfather said the child was studying at an international school in Mysuru and was under treatment for hyperactivity. The child’s father went to the U.S. in search of a job. The grandfather then approached a school in the city. He was turned away with the advice that the child be admitted in a special school although a doctor has certified that the child was capable of studying in a regular school.

It was then that he approached the school at Thiruvaniyoor. The school reportedly collected fee in advance and then went back on its word.
