A hero stone found at Semmiamangalam in Polur taluk of Tiruvannamalai district has reached the Vellore museum on Thursday.
Sriranjani, revenue official from Modaiyur in Polur taluk, handed over the stone to museum curator K. Saravanan for further research. The stone has been kept for public view inside the museum campus. A hero stone is a memorial commemorating the honourable death of a hero in battle. They often carry inscriptions displaying a variety of adornments, including bas relief panels, frieze, and figures on carved stone.
Archaeologists say that usually they are in the form of a stone monument and may have an inscription at the bottom with a narrative of the battle. Many such hero stones were retrieved at various destinations in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts.
No inscriptions were seen on the stone, Mr. Saravanan said. The parameters of the hero stone helped in identifying that it was from the 16th century. It would be subjected to further research to know about its antiquity, he added.
