NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old man died after being mauled by a bull when he hit the animal with his bike at Todapur in
west Delhi on Thursday. Eyewitnesses told police that Ravi was on his Enfield Bullet motorcycle going towards Todapur village. Near Pusa Road, he found his way blocked by the bull. He honked a few times, but the animal did not move. As Ravi tried to ride past it, his bike brushed against the animal and fell down. Startled by the honking and hit by the bike, the bull turned on Ravi and gored him.
Local residents rushed to Ravi’s help and tried to drag the animal away, but it tried to attack them too. A passing police team stopped and managed to divert the animal’s attention while the others pulled Ravi out of its way. However, the horns had penetrated his chest and abdomen in several places and he died on the spot.
The residents claimed that several of these animals freely roam on the streets and often block the traffic. Police are looking for the owners of the stray cattle and have asked the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to take action against their owners and to remove the animals from the area.
Ravi’s body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Friday. Police said that Ravi, a resident of a JJ colony nearby, worked at a factory in the area and was the only earning member of the family. He is survived by his wife, son and elderly father.
The municipal corporation had started cracking down on stray cattle earlier this year. The captured animals are sent to gaushalas run by Delhi Government. In most cases, the animals happen to belong to owners who have let them out to feed for themselves, thus saving on the expenses on fodder.
