MOHALI: Starting 6pm onwards from May 17, all the liquor
vends, pubs, restaurants, hotels in
Mohali and Chandigarh will not be selling
liquor in the wake of the polling day on May 19. The sale and serving of liquor will be prohibited for 48 hours till 6pm on May 19.
The liquor vends along the border areas of
Panchkula will also remian closed for 48 hours. The vends have already displayed the public notice mentioning their 48-hour closure.
To curb the distribution of alcohol among voters during the elections in Mohali, the excise department has warned liquor shops against selling it on the basis of ‘coupon or token’ in the district. An official said the department has issued a circular, directing liquor outlets across the district to strictly follow opening and closing time of their establishments. “Liquor outlets have also been asked to maintain up-to-date brand-wise stock register. Also, no sale will be done on the basis of coupon or token. None of the pubs, hotels, restaurants or discos can sell liquor,” he said. In the past few weeks, the excise department and Mohali police have seized hundreds of cartons of liquor being smuggled into Punjab from Chandigarh.
