Waste segregation in eight wards of Jaipur from Monday

JAIPUR: Come Monday and residents of eight wards in the city will segregate their garbage into dry and wet.
As a pilot project, Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has decided to implement the process in one ward in each of the eight zones of the city.

This long-pending drive fetches high marks in Swachhta Survekshan in which Jaipur has been lagging behind for many years. Initially, the plan is to collect the garbage from one ward of all eight zones after which it will spread across the city.
Kavita Chaudhary, deputy commissioner (health), who is monitoring the drive, said, “Swachhta Survekshan will start soon and waste segregation is must to fetch good marks. The vehicles collecting garbage already have dividers which will be in use from Monday. Right now, we are spreading awareness among people for segregating their wastes as per the guidelines and keep two dustbins for dry and wet garbage.”
When asked about the segregation on the stage of dumping yard, she said that first their target is to create awareness regarding waste segregation and then move on to another step.
City like Indore that has been number one position in the Swachhta Survekshan ranking for many years have a successful model of segregating the waste. Indore city administration has also been able to successfully clean the landfill sites in the city.
The step taken by JMC authorities though appreciated by many, councillors in whose ward it is going to be implemented claimed ignorance of the fact.
One of the councillors said, “I have no information of this issue but I would suggest the JMC administration to first implement the garbage collection system properly. Garbage collection vehicles are coming once in my ward in three to four days. Roads are not properly cleaned and many complaints to the JMC are not giving fruitful results.”
