As campaigning came to a close in West Bengal, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury made one last attempt at clearing the air that the CPI(M) cadres were not helping the BJP in anyway as some news reports suggested.

“Both the BJP and the Trinamool are jointly spreading a canard and the media is lapping it up to create a binary narrative in Bengal by saying that the CPI(M) and the Left are promoting the BJP,” he said in a video message.

Nothing can be farther from truth, he said. “Fact remains that only consistent fighter against the BJP and the communal forces against is the CPI(M) and the Left,” Mr Modi said.

He blamed the Trinamool Congress for facilitating the entry of the BJP into Bengal. “Trinamool has not only facilitated the entry of the BJP into Bengal but actually promoting it by indulging in competitive communalism. The Trinamool base is getting severely eroded and moving towards the BJP,” he said.

“The Left remains the last hurdle against the BJP in West Bengal and rest of the country. The fact remains that in West Bengal the CPI(M) remains the most consistent supporter of secularism. It is we who are ensuring that the BJP and the Trinammol’s competitive communalism will be ended,” he added.
