Being allegedly harassed by her husband for additional dowry, a mother threw her two children into a well before jumping into it herself as part of an alleged suicide pact at Sriharipuram village of Vijayapuram mandal in the district on Thursday.

‘Repeated assault’

According to the Vijayapuram police, Ramesh (35) and Purnima (29) of the village were married nine years ago. Ramesh, a worker at a power sub-station, had been allegedly assaulting Purnima for the past five years, demanding additional dowry. The couple had two children - Akhila (6) and Jaswant (8). The police took Ramesh into custody and booked a case of dowry harassment and abetting of suicide. Those in distress can dial 100.
