Four confirmed and 15 suspected cases of dengue fever were reported in Kozhikode district in the past one month. A total of 14 confirmed cases and more than 100 suspected cases were reported since January 2019.
A press release from the District Medical Office said that Maruthonkara, Kunduthodu and Maniyoor were the areas from where maximum number of cases were reported.
Dengue fever can be checked only by eliminating the breeding sources of aedes mosquitoes. So, the pre-monsoon cleaning is very important and all should take part in cleaning drives, District Medical Officer (DMO) V. Jayasree said.
Local bodies should take the initiative to coordinate various departments to take part in the drives. Heads of institutions should take the initiative to clean up the premises of their institutions.
Ward-level squads headed by ward members and other people’s representatives should visit houses to ensure that cleaning activities are being carried out and continued.
Special care should be taken to eliminate mosquito sources such as broken utensils, coconut shells, abandoned tyres, bottles and egg shells. Coconut shells used for tapping in rubber plantations as well as areca nut leaves that collect water in them pose great risk and special care should be taken in this regard.
Local bodies should also take note of waste dumped in public places and markets. They should be collected and process scientifically, the DMO said.
