Jaap Stam names two clubs De Ligt should choose over Man United

Jaap Stam believes Matthijs de Ligt should join Liverpool or Barcelona.

The former Manchester United defender, won the Champions League and three league titles with United before finishing his career at Ajax — where’s he’s also been a coach — believes De Ligt’s development will be best served away from the Eredivisie champions.

“It’s important that he’ll get playing time,” Stam told DAZN .

“If you look at the squads: Barcelona, after losing to Liverpool, probably wants to strengthen their squad, especially in defence, if you ask me. The question is how they are going to solve that problem.

“I think that Matthijs de Ligt would be a good fit though. It will be great to see how he performs against better players in a better league, not just every few weeks, but every weekend.

“Same goes for Liverpool. We all know who is their biggest defensive star — his Dutch colleague (Virgil van Dijk) — the other players, (Dejan) Lovren and (Joel) Matip, rotate quite a lot.

“The big question is if he’ll immediately play all matches. I think he has enough quality to do so. In those big leagues it’s normal to have to deal with rotation, especially at the start you will probably start on the bench a bit more often.

“After that, you have to get used to the level and the quality of your opponents. I think the people around him, and Matthijs himself, are smart enough to pick the option with the most playing time. In that case, money won’t make a difference.”

Hull City want talented Liverpool youngster

Hull City are targeting Liverpool youngster Herbie Kane for a potential loan deal next season.

The highly-rated midfielder has reportedly been tracked by the Championship side since the turn of the year, according to Hull Live.

The 20-year-old has spent the last nine months on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League One and shone in a side that faces Charlton Athletic in the second leg of their play-off semi-final tonight.

Doncaster boss Grant McCann has hailed Kane as a “special” talent this season and his promise was reflected by Liverpool handing the rookie a new deal in December.

Goalkeeper's agent confirms Reds contact

Liverpool have been in contact with the agent of Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, according to the player’s representative Erdi Kirkpinar.

Cakir has established himself as the Turkish club’s No 1 keeper since November, keeping five clean sheets in 20 Super Lig appearances for the fourth-placed outfit.

Kirkpinar, speaking to Ajansspor, claims Liverpool are lining up 23-year-old Cakir as the keeper to come in and provide back-up to Alisson.

He said: “Every team have scouts and some of them are following Ugurcan’s matches.

“Schalke haven’t made an official offer for him. I know Lille and Schalke are following him.

“Liverpool are also interested in him. Liverpool officials have talked with us, we had some contacts, but no official offer has come from them.”

Liverpool could be on the look-out for a new back-up shot-stopper to undisputed first-choice Alisson with Reds No 2 Simon Mignolet possibly departing Anfield this summer.

The 31-year-old has made over 200 appearances for Liverpool but was limited to just two outings last term in the domestic cup competitions and is likely to move on in search of more regular game-time.

Real Madrid want Salah

Zinedine Zidane is believed to have told his superiors that he wants to significantly boost his attack with another new addition as Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is also reportedly set to sign for the club.

According to the media outlets, Madrid are eyeing a move for Liverpool forward Salah with the Egyptian believed to be Zidane’s preferred option to join Hazard and Karim Benzema in a three-pronged attack for next season.

However, the Reds attacker is one of Jurgen Klopp’s star players and for one it seems unlikely that Real Madrid would have the cash to buy Hazard and Salah - plus not to mention the fact there is no way Salah is going to be up for sale.

The reports go on to add that Madrid are expected to try and sign an alternative attacker if they fail in their attempts to lure Salah to Spain.

Last night Sky Sports reported that Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic had completed a £52.4m (€60m) move to Real Madrid so it would make this move for Salah even more unlikely.

Firmino not for sale amidst PSG interest

Liverpool will reportedly not consider selling Roberto Firmino this season despite rumoured interest from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian frontman has been nothing short of excellent since joining the Reds in 2015 and helped his side to a club-record 97 Premier League points this season.

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel reportedly sees Firmino as a long-term replacement for Edinson Cavani, who could leave Paris this summer.

But the BBC report that it’s a deal that Liverpool won’t even consider and that the Reds will keep hold of the Brazilian.

De Ligt himself to decide on next club

Guillem Balague was asked about De Ligt’s future on his ‘Ask Guillem’ YouTube series.

The Spanish football expert said it was now down to the Ajax captain about where he wants to go with Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG interested.

Balague said: “De Ligt, of course, is possibly going to Barcelona.

“There’s been meetings between Barcelona and [De Ligt’s agent] Mino Raiola in recent weeks and also Barcelona and Ajax.

“They’re willing to pay about €70m (£61m), Ajax are happy with that.

“It’s now down to the player where he wants to go to. Bayern Munich, PSG and Liverpool wanted him.

“But I feel that he’s close - or that’s what Barcelona feels, that they’re close to getting him.

“There is a cup final to be played so I don’t know when the announcement will be made but in the next couple of weeks we should know everything about that one.”
