A baby girl, aged between 10 and 11 months, was found abandoned in a bush along the railway tracks at Juinagar, sector 24, on Friday. A few passersby spotted the baby lying there around 8am and informed the police.

Rajendra Chavan, senior inspector of Nerul police station said, “There is a small lane amid the bushes. Locals, who were walking along that lane, spotted the baby in the bushes. Someone had laid a towel on the ground and then put the baby over there.”

The police sent the baby to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hospital at Vashi for medical checkup. Later she was sent to a child care home.

“It is still not clear who kept the baby there and when. We believe, her parents or the guardians abandoned her due to some personal issues. We have registered a case under section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified people,” said Chavan.

He added, “The area is also close to a private hospital. We will scrutinise the CTTV footage of the entire area to get some clues about the people who abandoned her.”
