Rules for the road as bike season approaches

As the temperature rises so will the number of bicycles on the road... more cyclists means there's more to watch out for on a bike or in a car.

News 8's alec giannakopoulos has some tips on how to avoid potential tickets and accidents as bike season approaches.

Tomorrow marks national take your bike to work day, and whether you'll get to work tomorrow by car or bike, local police and cyclists i talked to say, it's important keep alert when you comute so you can share the road.

"it's starting to feel like summer and more people are out enjoying the fresh air.

More people are also back out on their bikes, which means motorists have more to look out for on the roads.

The wisconsin d o t estimates that 1/3 of bike accidents can happen because a bike is going the wrong way in traffic.

"if you're riding in the street we want to remind you that you need to follow the rules of the road just like a vehicle would have to as well" a rule of thumb for cyclists is if you can get a ticket for something driving, you can get a ticket for it on a bike.

"we often see a cyclist rolling through a stop sign rather than coming to a complete stop... failure to use a turn signal, if you're on a bicycle you need to use your arm signals, so if you're taking a right or a left hand turn we often see them not using a turn signal" cyclists can do more to stand out.

"helmets, lights, bright clothing" having the the right gear can make cyclists easier to see.

"lights all the time... day time night time, and flashing so motorists could be able to see them far away...bright colored clothing during the day you can see on your feet or moving parts."

But cyclists aren't he only ones who need to stay alert.

"motorists need to stay off their cell phones, people are on their phones all the time and that's the problem more so than paying attention."

If everyone can put their phones away while on the move, it can go a long way.

If people could stay off their cellphone whether riding their bike or driving or even walking everybody would be safer bicycles are treated as a vehicle on the road so failing to stop at signs, or illegal left turns on a bike can earn you a ticket... and they can be steep.

For example riding your bike on the sidewalk downtown can cost you 124- dollars.

May is national bike month and bike to work day is one of the events they have promoted for this month.
